I stumbled upon this statement a few weeks ago and it stuck with me: continental drift, World War, 9/11, the discovery of fire, electricity, gravity and so many more. All of these preceded great changes. Yet all of these incidences of chaos led to things greater than anyone would’ve imagined.

This year we have the amazing support of TURBO Bodyboards, a brand that is growing exponentially in South Africa and getting behind the young guns of our sport. We also have Red Bull who will be supporting the event and making sure the Tand Invitational riders as well as spectators stay energized throughout the day as the action unfolds! This, along with the IBA sanctioning, is moulding this contest into the best South Africa has seen. We couldn’t have done anything without all these guys behind us and our sport!

Last year went off with insane riding in amazing waves and Jared Houston coming out the eventual winner in an incredible final.

This year has seen minor changes with the introduction of the David Lilienfeld Trials. We intended to honour and remember David Lilienfeld by naming the trial event after him, as he would have no doubt been a part of the Tand Invitational. The four trial finalists will be granted an entry into the main event.

The David Lilienfeld Trials will be held on the 23rd and/or 24th June in the Tableview area at the best and biggest wave on the day. These trials are open to absolutely ANY bodyboarder wishing to compete. If you want to be a part of the main event come and test your skills amongst those who want it just as much as yourself.

For the main event we now have a longer waiting period of 3 weeks from the 25th June – 15th July barring the break for the SABA Plett Wedge Classic from the 5th July – 7th July. This will allow for all potential Tand Invitational competitors to take part in the event in the best possible conditions.

The wave is heavy, the locals are heavier, but we have been granted this privilege and all the riders intend to take full advantage of this blessing.
