2013 Go Pro IBA Arica Chilean Challenge – Final Day

Ben Player has emerged the winner of the Arica Chilean Challenge, edging out his fellow Aussie and good mate Dave Winchester in a dramatic final. In front of hundreds of fans Winny lead the heat in flawless 6 foot conditions, until Ben responsed with a draining barrel to invert, securing his an 8.7 for his efforts. From that point on, Winny was left searching for a counter-score of 7.79 which never came.

On his way to the final, Ben also had to take down an on-fire Dallas Singer in what was arguably the heat of the contest. Dallas managed a massive 17.88 in the semi, with Ben somehow managing to knock him from the comp with a huge 18.85. Ryan Hardy was another casualty of Ben’s, exiting the competition via Ben’s buzzer-beating barrel in the quarter-finals dying minutes.
Ben now leads the World Tour, securing his second win of the year at Pumping El Gringo.

2013 Go Pro IBA Arica Chilean Challenge – Day 1

The first Day of the Main Event of the Go Pro IBA 2013 Arica Chilean Challenge
got underway in typical pumping El Gringo conditions.

The Swell was not as big as expected, but still produced world class waves providing a great show for hundreds of spectators on the beach.

Standout of the day was Mike Stewart (HAW) posting a heat total of 15.96 out of a possible 20 points. The Hawaiian legend was also awarded the single highest wave score of the event thus far, a near perfect 9.38 ride for a long and deep left-hand barrel across the entire length of the “El Gringo” reef.

Yoan Florantin (REU) and Jacob Romero (HAW) also posted impressive heat scores of 15.86 and 15.3 respectively. Both riders took full advantage of the powerful and rampy conditions, impressing the judges and spectators alike by launching high flying backflips and inverts over the shallow reef.

The Local Chilean, Renato Arellano, who advanced to the main event from the trials, was unable to find his rhythm in Round 1 this morning, relegating him into the sudden death format of Round 2. Arellano was able to fend off Brazilian trialist Israel Salas, Brahim Iddouch (MOR) and George Humphreys (AUS) to take out the final heat of the day. Victorious, he was cheered at the beach by the local fans, friends and family.

This year commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Arica Chilean Challenge. A big swell has been travelling across the South Pacific for the past few days and is forecasted to produce excellent conditions for the rest of the week.

Lachlan Cramsie Wins Arica Trials

Lachie Cramsie has emerged at the top of a stacked trials field, tearing apart the sections on offer in Chile.
The young Sunny Coast local lived up to his “future world champ” moniker, defeating Ruben “Babby” Quiñones (PR) in 2nd, George Humphreys (AUS) in 3rd and Roberto Bruno (BRA) in 4th.
The top 7 trialists secured themselves a spot in the main event where they will compete against the top 24 GSS riders and event wildcards: Alan Espinoza (Local Wildcard), Jake Stone (AUS) and Diego Cabrera (CNY) IBA Wildcards.
The level of competition was high throughout, which you can plainly see for yourself in the header highlights reel of the event.
