Jeff Hubbard wins IBA TURBO ZICATELA PRO 2012

Zicatela,Thursday 4th October – Hawaiian Jeff Hubbard has won the IBA TURBO ZICATELA PRO 2012 in flawless 6-8 foot surf at Puerto Escondido today. Hubbard defeated 6x World Champion Guilherme Tamega (BRA) with a high flying air roll and deep barrels in the final to claim his second Zicatela Pro title.

The 2 x World Champion fell victim in the non-elimination Round 4 of the event, but taking the longer road to the final did not slow down the hungry Hawaiian. Hubbard took down Australian super talent Mitch Rawlins in Round 6 this morning and managed to keep his momentum, topping Magno Passos (BRA) in the quarterfinals and current World Champion Pierre-Louis Costes in the semifinal. Guilherme Tamega was looking strong thought the event, defeating an inform Mark McCarthy (ZAF) in the quarterfinal and current ratings leader Dave Winchester (AUS) in the semifinal, but could not match Hubbard’s aerial antics in the final.

Today Tamega bagged his third 2nd place finish of 2012, making it clear that he is hungry for a seventh world title. Winchester’s 3rd place finish has helped him improve on his current points, but with the other three semifinalists also drastically improving on their points, the world title race has heated up between the top four seeds and will be decided at the Encanto World Series in Puerto Rico or possibly the final event of 2012, the Fronton Pro scheduled for 7-16th of December in the Canary Islands.

Pierre Louis Costes wins 2012 Sintra Portugal Pro

Praia Grande, Sintra, Saturday 1st September 2012 - Pierre-Louis Costes (FRA) has taken out the IBA 2012 Sintra Portugal Pro, defeating South Africa’s Jared Houston in a nail-biting final. The Frenchman opened up his account with a 6.63 out of a possible 10 points for a backflip on his first wave and backed it up with a 6.18 to fend off the South African. Although Houston was slow to start, he managed to lock in a 7.00 point ride, the highest wave score of the final, committing to a lofty backflip on a set wave, but was unable to post anything higher than a 5.55 for the remainder of the final, 0.26 short of the required score.
This result will catapult Costes up the rankings, putting him into contention for a second world title.

“I am so happy with this win”, especially because I was contemplating whether or not to compete at this event.” Costes added, “before today I was not really thinking of a world title, now I will have to focus on Mexico and see if It is possible.”

Being the two “Young Guns” on tour, Costes and Houston have had some memorable match-ups at places like Puerto Escondido and Fronton. Today was the first time they faced off in a final.

“Finally I met him in the final and it brought out the best in me”, Costes commented. “We have had a few man-on-man heats together in the past and it always seems to push our surfing to its best. I want to congratulate him, he is hard to beat.

Today’s second place finish for Jared Houston has solidified the young South African’s reputation on the GSS tour. Well known for his big wave antics, Houston held his nerve today and showed that he can perform on any platform.

Houston elated, “I am very happy with a 2nd place finish, but disappointed to have lost. I was pretty nervous going up against Pierre in the final, just because we have a history, but it was a very hard fought heat.”

Mens Final

In joint 3rd, Mark McCarthy (ZAF) and Alex Uranga (ESK) had stellar performances throughout the event, but fell short to the eventual winner Pierre-Louis and Jared respectively. Uranga seems to have earned himself a reputation as a “Giant Killer”, taking down current rankings leader Dave Winchester (AUS) and Guilherme Tamega 6x world champion on his way to the semifinal. McCarthy had a long road to the semifinal, surfing a total of eight heats, more than any other competitor, as he was relegated to fight his way through the repocharge rounds and defeated an in form Jeff Hubbard (HAW) in the quarterfinal before eventually loosing steam in the semifinal.

The next Mens GSS event will be held at Puerto Escondido/Zicatela from September 27th to October 6th 2012.

Tand Invitational 2012

2012 Tand Invitational

2012 TAND INVITATIONAL

We knew it would be a good solid size on the morning of the 2nd July and the start of the Tand Invitational 2012, but wow, were we in for a surprise! As we were finishing setting up and the light started to illuminate the scene, we came to the realization that the waves were large and in charge. Tand was going to deal out some lashings for any and all who doubted her.

Waiting for the tide to get a bit fuller due to the size of the swell we heard murmurs and silent whispers of fear. But a fear that motivated all the riders to a level that we believe has not ever been reached in South African bodyboarding to date.

We were able to run the brand new “Score Bru” live scoring system, produced by PJ Venter. The use of the live scoring system was a first for Bodyboarding in SA and went off smoothly with only good things to come in the future for this new to us application!

The groms paddled out with gusto, showing off and impressing all the wide eyed spectators. These were Turbo Wildcard and Bluff boy Stephen Du Preez and Tableview boys Jason Fowler, Corban Warrington and Ian Viljoen. These guys are the future of our sport here and they are being mentored to carry a large mantle.

Jared Houston

Quarter finals went out in 8 – 10ft gurgling monsters, but everyone was up for the challenge and the standouts in this round were Local dominator Rupert La Grange for riding a ridiculously sized wave, Stephen Du Preez, Tomas Degenaar and Mark McCarthy with a crazy opening barrel.

With a few upsets occurring the semi-finals were set, but the swell continued to build all day. We made a tough decision to run the semi’s and finals the following day and opted to send out all the riders for a mass Shaggy’s Choice Expression Session to decide who would walk away with the sweet R1500 cheque. The results were some mind-blowing barrels, huge air attempts and a few big spankings!

The morning of the second day was as thick with mist as a Jamaican’s car on Bob Marley’s birthday. Not good! After waiting a few hours the mist lifted and granted us golden light for a precious 1 hour and 11 minutes. We ran the semi-finals and with perfect 6-8ft lined up pearlers, all the riders were getting barrel after barrel and both the heats were tight! The standouts in this round were Jared Houston’s moon tickle of an invert, Sasha Specker committing to a crazy ARS and Henk Esterhuysen for being Captain pit pilot.

This left us with the final, Mark McCarthy, Henk Esterhuysen, Jared Houston and Adam Morely. They paddled out and after a couple of waves and Boetie (McCarthy) getting a cracker barrel the mist rolled in thicker than ever and we couldn’t see 10m in front of us. We paused the heat, got the riders out, discussed our options and came to the conclusion to play the waiting game once more.

Mark McCarthy

Waiting, waiting, waiting and as 16:30 rolled around the mist lifted slightly and we picked up where we had left off. Jerry (Houston) got a big backflip and good barrel combination and Adam Morley just narrowly missed out on a huge deep barrel. Boetie got a few good back up scores and with that the heat was over.

On the land no one knew who had won. The finalists gathered on the rock podium and it was then announced; Jared Houston successfully defended his Tand Invitational title and was deemed winner of the Tand Invitational 2012, with a hair-splittingly close 2nd going to Mark McCarthy (De-Ja-Vu of last year’s final), Adam Morley in 3rd and Henk Esterhuysen in 4th.

Taking out the Shaggy’s Choice Award, and deservingly so, was Henk Esterhuysen for a barrel that was borderline insanity which left all the spectators screaming like wild baboons on the shoreline!

A HUGE thanks going out to TURBO BODYBOARDS and the IBA who got behind us in a big way and support the sport in our country to no end, as well as to Red Bull for keeping everyone refreshed and energized in the frosty winds for two days straight!

Without you all; the sponsors, the riders, the spectators, the online supporters and everyone else who helped out at the event, the Tand Invitational 2012 would not have been the success it was. We thank you!
